Why Focus on Black Women?

Growing up around a tribe of strong Black Women in my community, I observed them giving a lot of themselves to their familes, their communities and their jobs. In high school I remember writing an essay about why my mother was my hero. She did it all and we wanted for nothing. But she was also overweight, developed diabetes and other health issues. She was literally carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders and it was impacting her health.

Fast forward through college and getting into Brown University where I obtained my MPH. I remember sitting in those classes and listening to them talk about being Black as a risk factor for some many diseases and health issues. I wanted to sink in my seat, especially being one of maybe 2-3 other Black students in the class.

My life experience and my education has taught me that the world depends heavily on Black Women and that the pressure of it can have an adverse effect on their health. So I wanted to create a space that prioritizes the Black Woman and says “Sis, I see you and I got you.” A place where she can find community and try new things. Somewhere she does not have to have it all figured out. Somewhere she can feel safe to peel back some of those layers that we have to put on to face the world. A true safe space, a safe community. That is the BWA way!
